The next generation of its innovative EsophyX® device, EsophyX2 facilitates the creation of a robust, tight antireflux valve with the TIF®2 (transoral incisionless fundoplication) advanced surgical procedure for the treatment of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). Over 21 million people in the U.S. alone suffer from GERD, also known as chronic acid reflux, a progressive disease. Although moderate to severe acid reflux is typically treated with medications such as PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) and histamine receptor antagonists (H2 blockers), these medications can lose their effectiveness over time, requiring progressively higher dosing. In addition, known side effects of long-term use of PPIs include osteomalacia (inadequate absorption of calcium and other minerals into the bones). Recent case studies on the adverse effects of long-term PPI use indicate a significantly higher incidence of hip fractures, particularly among women.
