Redwood City, CA (January 28, 2009) — EndoGastric Solutions® (EGS), the recognized leader in the emerging field of Natural Orifice Surgery (NOS), today announced that 15 new U.S. medical centers performed their first TIF® (Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication) surgical procedures for the treatment of GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) last quarter using EGS’ innovative EsophyX® surgical device. In addition, 12 new U.S. centers performed their first procedures using EGS’ other ground-breaking surgical device, StomaphyX®. Among these, three of the nation’s leading academic medical centers join the list of Natural Orifice Surgery centers; Stanford University Medical Center, Palo Alto, CA; Columbia University Medical Center, NY, NY, and Emory Healthcare’s Emory Crawford Long Hospital , Atlanta, GA

“Patients and surgeons are increasingly demanding greater effectiveness with lower risk and lower downtime.” said Thierry Thaure, President and Chief Executive Officer of EndoGastric Solutions. “Natural Orifice surgery gives the surgeon the ability to create substantial anatomic correction without incisions. The 27 centers launching NOS with EGS technology in Q4 are leaders in the future of surgery. NOS is gaining momentum. Our training courses have been filling up rapidly. Our growth should only accelerate.”

The EsophyX TIF procedure is performed transorally (through the mouth) to reconstruct the antireflux barrier and restore the competency of the gastroesophageal junction, resulting in the effective elimination of GERD for many patients. TIF is the first incisionless transoral procedure to provide a truly effective anatomical solution to a disease that today is typically treated with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).  Research shows that of the approximately 30 million Americans diagnosed with chronic GERD and dependent on daily medications, 20-40% are not satisfied with PPIs.

Livingston Hospital, Salem Kentucky, EsophyX TIF Procedures Performed November 2008 by William Barnes MD and Michael Gavin, MD. Dr. Barnes commented, “We are a critical access hospital. GERD is a very common disease. Even in our small community the response has been enormous.  In the two months since we launched our NOS program we have performed over a dozen EsophyX TIF procedures.  Our patients suffering with GERD, some of whom were on pharmaceuticals for many years, were reluctant to have an open or laparoscopic surgery to treat the disease. The incisionless nature of Natural Orifice Surgery means that we are able to offer more patients the benefits of an anatomical correction for their GERD and the hope of a GERD-free future.”

EGS’ StomaphyX is used to create full-thickness folds, or “plications,” in the GI tract. With a single insertion, a virtually unlimited number of plications can be created and customized to the needs of the patient.

Stanford Hospital, Palo Alto, CA, StomaphyX Procedure Performed December 18 by John Morton, MD. Dr. Morton explained, “The StomaphyX device affords my patients an endoscopic treatment option. StomaphyX enables us to offer our patients a minutely invasive surgical alternative that provides effective results. Our preliminary results have been excellent.”
